I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate these. I quit singing almost two years ago. I had lost my urge to perform. Practicing and learning new songs seemed like pure torture. So I've taken a pause.
But these little tastes are good therapy for me. The fact that they are remote is actually good because I don't feel pressured. They are a nice length. And you are so supportive and friendly that it's a balm to my nerves.
So thank you very much, Paula! -- Elisabeth Goebel
----------
For 15 minutes you learn about songs, singing, good jamming techniques, and how to make everybody win on Jazz Jam night! We're all here to have fun and everybody wins. Paula's little tasty morsels each Monday are definitely a bite in the right direction. -- Charla Hathaway
----------
Paula Byrne's "A Little Taste," 15-minute tidbits of singing wisdom, are indeed tasty. From how to sing low notes to putting more pizzazz in your jazz, Paula's insights provide a focus for each week's practice session. I've especially found myself listening more intently to how the best singers use these techniques. Highly recommend and it's free! -- Anita Thompson
----------
One evening during a break at a group class, I privately asked the extraordinary pianist who was accompanying us, "What is the most important thing a singer can do to improve?"
His response was short and to the point: "Listen."
As much as I was hoping for something more esoteric, some "secret"
that would help me leap and bound ahead on the path, this advice opened a whole lifetime plus of exploration for me. Interestingly, it also liberated me.
Paula Byrne's "A Little Taste" generously offers what she has learned through years of passionately engaged listening. It's like a booster rocket to a new place. Or a gentle twist of the kaleidoscope to a new vision.
Thank you, Paula. -- LaRae Zawodny
----------
I so enjoy "A Little Taste." I am not a trained singer, not nearly so -- though I do love to sing, and in my fantasy world I am a classic crooner. What I love most about what Paula offers is that I get to learn so much about singing. Every session includes 3 or 4 tidbits of song, usually from a very well-known singer, that all offer examples of what Paula is conveying. So the sessions are not theoretical Ð they are rooted in musical reality. Now I find that I enjoy the singing of others so much more as I am tuned in to what they are doing. What a great gift! To have increased my enjoyment of music in my daily life! Thank you, Paula. -- David Roche
----------
Paula Byrne's "A Little Taste" sessions are a delicious mouthful of food for thought for any singer. At just about 15 minutes, they are not to be missed.
The concepts, quick insights and wonderful vocal examples from Paula herself, or an array of talented singers' work online, leave much to chew on afterwards through practice, and intrigue me to experience that vocal cuisine more fully. Thanks, Paula. -- Joyce de la Fuente
----------
I have participated in almost all of Paula Byrne's "A Little Taste" since she began it earlier this year. I am a weekly singer - whether I'm practicing and performing with my jazz trio or performing open mics and jam sessions - Paula's lessons have come through loud and clear. I'll be performing a song and it hits me - hey I'm doing that thing we learned.
So worth the 15 minutes and it's free! -- Mary Boehme
----------
"A Little Taste" helps me by giving me a smaller and more manageable "portion" of useful lessons.
I lost my desire to perform or to even take lessons or practice a couple of years ago. I just didn't want to do anything music-related anymore. I still have an interest in music and a lesser interest in singing, so these mini-sessions are perfect for me at this stage. No heavy demands, no pressure (it's usually self-imposed anyway), and a reasonable amount of time required.
I love the fact that it requires no driving! I never realized how much time I spent driving to things before the pandemic and now I confess I like not having to get in the car everyday for something or other.
All of these elements make "A Little Taste" unique, but I think that Paula herself makes it truly unique. She is a wonderful teacher and coach. She sets a good pace for information flow back and forth; she's interesting, informed, and engaging; and she is just generally delightful. (Yes, YOU Paula!) -- Elisabeth Goebel

SINGERS !
We all know the joy and exhilaration
of hearing a great drum solo.
It can be the highlight of the night
when a drummer gets to really cut loose
on the bandstand.
Drummers get the audience rocking in their seats
and create a gateway for singers
to come back with high energy
at the top of the tune.
Yet many singers are afraid of drum solos.
We worry we don't know how to keep track
or we won't know when to come back in
or that we'll lose our key center
or we'll add, or subtract, a beat
among other things ...
It doesn't have be hard.
It's not rocket science.
It's not even math.
Join Brent Follis,
Steve Christofferson
and me
for a fun, fearless night
of singing with drums.
Learn how to keep track of the beat,
the song form, and your key center,
then actually have some FUN with the drummer
-- yes FUN!
Come learn:
What to listen for during the drum solo.
Which beats to keep in your body for each groove.
How to invite the drummer to "sing" with you.
What NOT to do during a drum solo.
Why you definitely do NOT want to count.
and more ...
As always, this will be an environment
of compassionate learning
and supportive community.
Brent Follis is a wonderfully melodic drummer
whose phrasing brings the lyrics alive
with emotion and deep grooves.
Steve Christofferson brings his world-class
piano skills to support and inspire you.
And I'll be there guiding you all the way.
You'll be in good hands.

Intros and Endings
Sunday, November 20, 2022
1:00 - 4:00 pm
The trickiest parts of a tune are often the beginning and the ending. Once you and your singer are solidly in the key center, you can both confidently express your harmonic ideas.
Learn how to use the melody to create a clear intro and give good support to your singer.
Practice matching your singer's energy and phrasing to craft a satisfying ending.
We will cover the most common intros and endings, as well as what to do when a tune -- or your singer -- surprises you!

What's My Line?
Sunday, January 8, 2023
1:00 - 4:00 pm
Let's approach your solos as a composer. We will explore themes and motifs using rhythmic and melodic ideas to your advantage.
Learn the art of creating lines that communicate the mood and lyric, keeping the listener engaged and your singer on track.
Forward, backward and in between -- Phrasing is the key to building dynamics and bringing expression to each line.
We will practice getting out of the box, off the 1/4 note, and then setting up your singer's re-entry after your solo.

Get into the Groove

Where are the best places to add some of these options, and how can you best guide (or follow) your singer through to the other side with ease and confidence.
#5
To Bow or Not to Bow -- that is the question

STUDENTS SPEAK:
Thank you so much for the class on Monday! I both needed it and enjoyed it, which is a nice combination.
I've toyed a bit with iReal Pro but it has so many options that I found it overwhelming. I never felt that I had enough time to do all the tutorials and practice on the program. But your class was perfectly matched to what I needed. I needed someone to gently nudge me into familiarity with the basic procedures and you did it beautifully.
I also appreciated the guidance with the tablet form of iReal Pro. Just seeing how the two types compared was extremely helpful.
Thank you very much again! -- Elisabeth Goebel

Hello Dear Singers !
I'm so happy to announce I'm returning to Bend, Oregon just before the dancing/singing retreat @ Breitenbush Hot Springs! (www.WildGrace.us)
I've been hosting these events twice a month in Portland for 6 years and it's one of my favorite ways to spend an evening.
'Siren Salon' is a casual, accepting atmosphere that allows everyone to step a little out of their comfort zone, cultivate new skills, learn new songs, and meet other singers and musicians.
Joining us are amazing musicians: Don McFarlane on piano, Tom Freedman on bass.
Bring your sheet music in your key, or send me a note with your songs and I'll locate a chart for you.
And...YES....Sirens can be male. ;-)
